Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW)
An Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) provides advice about both ecological and environmental issues during the construction of a development. Typically, this role will be filled by an environmental or construction professional who has direct responsibility for monitoring compliance with planning consents, environmental permits, legislation and mitigation. If you think your development will require an ECoW, then contact the team at Pioneer Environment, and we can fulfil this role for you.
Staff at Pioneer are dual professionals meaning our habitats team are also qualified ecologists. By delivering both aspects of this environmental role we can provide an ecological watching brief and undertake the management on-site, saving you more money.
When is an Ecological Clerk of Works Required On-site?
An ECoW may be required on site:
To ensure the development avoids disturbance to animals and protected species located in and around the site

As a requirement of some planning permissions

As a requirement of European Protected Species (EPS) licenses.
The Role of an ECoW
A competent ECoW will effectively oversee the management of the risks on-site which are associated with managing biodiversity. In addition, their efforts can help to ensure a smooth and cost-efficient construction process.

Duties include:
Giving advice on how to protect valued biodiversity features on construction sites

Providing practical, site-specific compliance requirements for environmental legislation

Avoiding unexpected costs, delays to project timetables, or adverse publicity

Managing ecological personnel engaged in ecological mitigation activities
