Pioneers Approach to Protected Species Surveys

Pioneer Environment offers a wide range of protected species surveys, from simple assessments to comprehensive protected species surveys backed up with detailed impact assessments and licence applications where applicable. Our team is made up of habitat and species specialists, with decades of knowledge and field experience between us.

If you think you might require a protected species survey, or you would like to talk through your proposed development with experts, contact Pioneer Environment.

What is a Protected Species Survey?

A protected species survey is a targeted assessment for a particular plant or animal which is safeguarded under UK or EU law. Whether its large-scale infrastructure or small-scale planning permission, protected species play a fundamental role in the process.

The presence of protected species varies depending on geographic location and habitat, so it is advisable to contact our office and find out the requirements before finalising plans. In addition, protected species surveys can be follow-up surveys suggested within the initial walkover survey report or Preliminary Ecological Appraisal.

It is always best to talk your project through with an Ecologist as soon as possible as most surveys have to be carried out at certain times throughout the year. See our survey calendar for more information. Early discussions can avoid delays to working schedules.

The UK’s Protected Species

If you are planning a new development, you must consider how the project might affect any protected species on or near the proposed development site. By getting in touch with an ecological specialist, you will be able to quickly identify what steps you need to take to ensure your planning application meets all the legal requirements necessary.

What to Expect From a Protected Species Survey

Depending on the species, surveys consist of gathering evidence of habitation, or the potential for it. The methods used will depend on the species, but can include visual searches, tree climbing, camera traps, eDNA testing, and nest box checks. See individual species pages for more detailed information.
