We use approved methods to exclude species, contain them safely, or control their movement to aid capture and translocation. Depending on the species and site, we provide specialist fencing, netting, grids, barriers, one-way doors, pitfall traps, and other equipment — installed as temporary, semi-permanent, or permanent structures.
Species-specific exclusion programmes include:
-
Newts – low fencing buried into the ground
-
Reptiles – low-level fencing
-
Badgers – subterranean fencing, one-way gates, ground mesh
-
Water voles – medium-height fencing buried 0.5m deep
-
Otters – high tensile steel or chicken mesh fencing with returns at top and bottom
-
Deer – high-strength fencing up to 1.8m
Proper maintenance and eventual removal of exclusion fencing is just as important as installation. We provide ongoing support to ensure fencing remains effective throughout the project lifecycle.

In addition to species mitigation, we also offer a range of general fencing solutions for landowners, developers, and infrastructure projects. These services are not tied to ecological mitigation but provide practical land management and site security.

Our fencing options include:
Stock fencing – durable solutions for agricultural land
-
Post & wire fencing – cost-effective boundary marking
-
Post & rail fencing – robust, traditional fencing for livestock, property boundaries and preventing public access
By combining ecological expertise with practical land management services, Pioneer Habitats delivers fencing solutions that meet both conservation requirements and everyday site needs.
